Commercial Photography Lighting Techniques: Example 7

Speedotron Brown Line Beauty Dish Portrait

Commercial Photographic Lighting Diagram: Beauty Dish and Reflector

Equipment Used
* Canon 1ds * 100 macro * 100mm ISO100 f13 1/60sec
* Speedotron Brownline 800ws one M11 head
* Beauty Dish (16″ Reflector) 5′ away about 45 degrees to the left of subject, ceiling height
* The direction of the light is perpendicular to the subject
* White reflector directly to right of subject just out of camera view

This room is about 12′x14′ with a dining room table in it, we did not have much space to light the subject and background separately! This is an area where the beauty dish shines. The first thing to do is to pull the subject as far away from the background as possible. Do not point the dish directly at the subject, feather the light so the dish is perpendicular to the subject. This will do three things:

  1. Produce a much softer light that wraps around the subject
  2. Require you to use a bigger f-stop which will help blur and separate the background
  3. Because the background is about 3′ behind the subject the single beauty dish lightsource will light the background slightly less than the subject, this will separate the subject from the background even more
